293 - Marine Carbon Biogeochemistry

Marine Carbon Biogeochemistry: A Primer for Earth System Scientists (SpringerBriefs in Earth System Sciences) by Jack J. Middelburg (Author)

This book discusses biogeochemical processes relevant to carbon and aims to provide readers, graduate students and researchers, with insight into the functioning of marine ecosystems.

A carbon centric approach has been adopted, but other elements are included where relevant or needed.

The book focuses on concepts and quantitative understanding of primary production, organic matter mineralization and sediment biogeochemistry. The impact of biogeochemical processes on inorganic carbon dynamics and organic matter transformation are also discussed.

SC - 480 | Coastal Heritage and Cultural Resilience

Coastal Heritage and Cultural Resilience (Ethnobiology) by Lisa L. Price (Editor), Nemer E. Narchi (Editor)

This book explores the knowledge, work and life of Pacific coastal populations from the Pacific Northwest to Panama. Center stage in this volume is the knowledge people acquire on coastal and marine ecosystems.

Material and aesthetic benefits from interacting with the environment contribute to the ongoing building of coastal cultures. The contributors are particularly interested in how local knowledge -either recently generated or transmitted along generations- interfaces with science, conservation, policy and artistic expression. Their observations exhibit a wide array of outcomes ranging from resource and human exploitation to the magnification of cultural resilience and coastal heritage. The interdisciplinary nature of ethnobiology allows the chapter authors to have a broad range of freedom when examining their subject matter. They build a multifaceted understanding of coastal heritage through the different lenses offered by the humanities, social sciences, oceanography, fisheries and conservation science and, not surprisingly, the arts. Coastal Heritage and Cultural Resilience establishes an intimate bond between coastal communities and the audience in a time when resilience of coastal life needs to be celebrated and fortified.

SC - 487 | Marine Pollution and Microbial Remediation

Marine Pollution and Microbial Remediation by Milind Mohan Naik (Editor), Santosh Kumar Dubey (Editor)

Marine environment is the largest habitat covering approximately 70% of the total earth surface. Oceans are the main regulatory agent of earth's climate and harbour a huge diversity of living organisms. Marine environment provide a unique ecological niche to different microbes which play a significant role in nutrient recycling as well as various environmental activities.

However with rapid industrialization, urbanisation, ship trafficking and mining activities enormous amounts of waste including heavy metals, hydrocarbons, chemicals, dyes, organic load, agriculture waste, pesticides, antifoulants (e.g. tributyltin) and bacterial pathogens have accumulated in marine/estuarine environments over several decades and pose a serious threat to marine macro and micro biota and humans and therefore require special attention. However some natural marine microbes are known to possess diverse resistance mechanisms and degradation pathways to variety of toxic pollutants and these unique characteristics of marine/estuarine bacteria proved to be an ideal tool in bioremediation of contaminated marine and estuarine environmental sites. Reclamation of marine polluted environments using marine microbes has been found to be effective, affordable and ecofriendly technological solution over conventional physical and chemical methods.
Objective of this book is focus on marine pollution and application of marine microorganisms in cost effective and ecofriendly methods of pollution abatement.

SC - 628 | Hazardous Chemicals Associated with Plastics in the Marine Environment

Hazardous Chemicals Associated with Plastics in the Marine Environment (The Handbook of Environmental Chemistry 78) 1st ed. 2019 Edition, by Hideshige Takada (Editor), Hrissi K. Karapanagioti (Editor)

This volume consists of 15 chapters and focuses on hazardous chemicals, how they are associated with plastics, and their environmental risks. It includes background information on plastics and additives chemistry, and their observed or potential effects on living organisms as well as the oceanographic aspects of marine debris dispersion.

The respective chapters provide insights into the sorption/desorption of chemicals in and out of plastics, the mechanisms and kinetics, but also the scale of the concentrations of chemicals found in marine debris, particularly in microplastics. The occurrence of the various chemicals is analyzed, as well as the distribution profiles of the chemicals in microplastics throughout the world's oceans. The implications of the fact that plastics carry within them several chemicals are discussed in detail. In closing, new research topics that warrant further attention are identified. The book will appeal to all scientists who are already working or interested in starting to work on the topic of marine debris, as well as policymakers, NGOs and the broader informed public.

SC - 743 | Aquatic Animals: Biology, Habitats, and Threats

Aquatic Animals: Biology, Habitats, and Threats (Marine Biology: Animal Science, Issues and Professions) by David L. Eder (Author)

This book presents topical research from across the globe in the study of the biology, habitats and threats to aquatic animals. It discusses topics that include the acoustic ecology of pinnipeds in polar habitats; the immunotoxicological reactivity of hemocytes of juvenile mudcrabs; the potential threat of genotoxic metals to marine mammal health; and, toxic contaminants in aquatic medium concerns and the role of bacteria in the chilled storage and cryopreservation of sperm in aquatic animals.
